Union Leader – Gingrich raises alarm at event honoring those who stand up for freedom of speech – Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich yesterday said the country will be forced to reexamine freedom of speech to meet the threat of terrorism.

Gingrich, speaking at a Manchester awards banquet, said a “different set of rules” may be needed to reduce terrorists’ ability to use the Internet and free speech to recruit and get out their message.

Why? How would that help? I think this is a case of fearing what one does not understand. This issue relates to my earlier political post… where do we draw the line between regulating for safety and public good (e.g. seatbelts) and substantive encroachments on personal liberty? I don’t think there’s a clear boundary, but I know that limiting internet communication crosses the line.
