The status of Office Open XML

ISO votes against fast tracking Microsoft’s Office Open XML

The International Organization for Standardization has voted against a proposal to fast-track Microsoft’s Office Open XML format as an international standard.

So it’s not a standard now, and if Microsoft makes the thousands of changes required for approval by the vote next year, it will probably become one, but everyone will have to update their copy of Office 2007 so that they can save files in the approved format. For now, (a) it looks like my upgrade was way too early, and (b) StarOffice looks like a promising alternative.
